Coaching Requirements
MYHA requires all head and assistant coaches to complete the certification requirements established by USA Hockey and Massachusetts Hockey each year.
Steps 1, 2, and 3 are required to be completed before you can participate in any team activities, including practice or games.
Failure to complete Step 4 by December 31st will result in you losing the ability to participate in team activities until all of your Coaching Education program requirements are complete.
- USA Hockey Registration - All coaches are required to register as a "Player/Coach" at membership.usahockey.com. This registration must be renewed annually. Upon completing your registration, email your USA Hockey number to “clerk@myha.com”.
- Background screening - Directions to complete the required background check through the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI) can be found at usahockey.com/backgroundscreen.
- USA Hockey Safe Sport Training - The directions for completing your SafeSport Program Training can be found at usahockey.com/safesporttraining.
- Note: To stay current in your certification you will need to complete the recertification process within a year.
- Coaching Education Program Requirements - All coaches must complete the following education program requierments:
- Foundations of Player Development Module - One-time course to be completed prior to registering for the required Age Specific Modules. This module can be accessed in your USA Hockey Learning Center.
- Age-Specific Training Modules - The required age-specific module must be completed once per age level. Details can be found on usahockey.com.
- Coaching Clinics - Coaches are required to attend one coaching clinic each season. Clinic levels 1-4 will be hosted online virtually. You can attend any clinic no matter what District/Affiliate it is hosted by. Details can be found on usahockey.com.
- LTS/LTP, Development, and U8: Coaches who only coach at these level should apply for the new 6u/8u level certification and take the appropriate courses. This certification is good for 5 years or until the member starts coaching at the 10U level (see below). Current Level 1-5 certified coaches qualified to coach at the LTS/LTP and U8 level (but must adhere to their certification requirements).
- U10 and above: Coaches must take an annual clinic until they’ve achieved Level 4. Level 4 and 5 coaches must complete 5 CE credits every three years to maintain their certification. Level 4 and 5 coaches who were certified priory to 1/1/21 have no further clinic or CE requirements but are encouraged to take CE courses.
